Writing as Medicine: Conversation, Poetry and Writing Practice with Laura Stone

This month's Bread & Poetry will feature Laura Stone, a poet who moves deftly from the concrete and intimate to the fluidity of essence. In this evening's workshop, Laura will share several of her poems, we will all do some free writing with prompts, and there will be  a lively Q & A about process and inspiration.

Laura asks us:

How can writing be a medicinal ingredient in our daily lives? How can we come to know that our unique voice is a medicine for others?

For Laura, writing is a way to slow down and sharpen her attention. "When we turn towards the telling instead of the doing, we can witness ourselves and the world anew," she says. "We’ll experience the wonders of writing in community, hear how writing about daily life can change our experience of the mundane, and explore how writing can connect us to our lineage and our longing for a more just world."

Laura Stone is a somatic psychotherapist and writer. She helps individuals and couples expand their sense of embodiment, move through trauma and create healthy boundaries. Her online class, “Writing as Medicine,” serves to inspire diverse voices and generate writing in community.

"Poetry, like bread, is for everyone." -Roque Dalton

Bread & Poetry is for people interested in language, particularly poetry, as a doorway to something sacred inside themselves. Mixing experiential writing exercises with lively Q & A and a range of featured poets, Bread & Poetry serves up language that dissolves borders between self and Self; self and other. It is a way to hold space for a community of undefended hearts, each speaking a love language at once personal and universal. As the poet David Whyte says, “Poetry is language against which you have no defenses.”
