Event Details

In partnership with the ART-4-ART Artist Trading Card (ATC) group, join us for a screening of Women Laughing, a short documentary about the women cartoonists of The New Yorker.

Directed by longtime cartoonist Liza Donnelly and filmmaker Kathleen Hughes, the film features artists including Roz Chast, Emily Flake, Liana Finck, Amy Hwang, and Bishakh Som. Through candid conversations and collaborative drawing sessions, Women Laughing explores creativity, resilience, and the evolving role of women in a field long dominated by men.

The documentary also revisits the magazine’s early history, revealing the surprising presence — and later disappearance — of women cartoonists before their return in recent decades. At its heart, the film is a celebration of humor, artistic expression, and women’s voices.

Stay after the screening for a community conversation about art, humor, storytelling, and a short introduction to ATCs, miniature trading cards that are made, traded, collected but never sold.

Free and open to the public.
Film run-time: 37 minutes
